Lyrics of the Moment

“Run” by Vampire Weekend

Every dollar counts
And every morning hurts
We mostly work to live
Until we live to work

She said,
“You know
There’s nowhere else to go”
But changing roles
It struck me that the two of us could run

Worlds away from cars
And all the stars and bars
Where a little bit of condensation means so much
And a little bit of change is all your little fingers touch

Toying with the idea of musical experimentation…

So for the past couple of days I have been mulling over an interesting musical endeavor. I am currently compiling all of the different music that I have less than desired knowledge of. Then over the course of maybe a month or so I will (when I have a day off from work) continuously listen to music of one of a select few genres. Yes, thats 24 hours of music (I plan on listening while sleeping too). I not only have to wait for a free day, but also for enough music. So far the genres I am working on include: Trance, Jazz, Blues, Swing, Classical, and Musical Theatre. I am up for any and all suggestions as well! I plan on making notes throughout the day of which songs I like, don’t like, how the style of music affected what I was doing at the time, etc. I am very excited and hope to post further updates soon!

“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and cannot remain silent” – Victor Hugo
“I think everyone should have a Beatles phase in their life. I think it’s part of growing up in the Western world.” – Jadelr and Cristina Cordova

I ought to say no, no, no, sir – Mind if I move closer…Baby It’s Cold Outside

Nothing gets me in the christmas mood like a good light show

Just hear those sleigh bells jingling, ring-ting-tingling, too
Come on, it’s lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you
Outside the snow is falling and friends are calling, ‘Yoo-hoo!’
Come on, it’s lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you

On being productive; and work_out

Apparently I’m not the only one who has been extremely productive this week. My friend Krista has also had a good week (detailed in her blog).
Yes, this week has found me reading again, continuing my 6-day a week workout routine, blogging more, and giving me that little time out of the week to just sit back and think. One very important factor in being productive is having just the right motivational soundtrack. Continue reading

The Philosophy of Lost

This upcoming Groundhogs Day America has much more to look forward to than a little rodent getting scared of his shadow or reruns of that 80′s movie. No, this year begins the long-anticipated series finale to ABC’s Lost.

My absolute favorite character in this show is a shock to most people (he has become quite the antihero), but John Locke is a fascinating example of absolute faith. Two of the main characters Jack Shephard and John are at almost continual conflict over their views on science and faith. Continue reading

And sorry I could not travel both

Ever had a single moment where you get that vision of your life as something totally different and you can see through things that you normally take at face value? The more people see things they become less exciting, noticeable.  Eventually you are driven to look for something more in your life, something that you believe will wash away the murk of the usual.

“Let that which stood in front go behind, let that which was behind advance to the front, let bigots, fools, unclean persons, offer new propositions, let the old propositions be postponed.” – Walt Whitman

What if you could change your fate, your destiny by glimpsing what you will become and actively working to change it? Not talking about seeing the future, just take an inventory and objectively determine your path.

Then take a leap of faith off that path and into the wild.

I-I freeze, I can’t move, and I’m suddenly consumed with the overwhelming sensation that I’m covered with some sort of film. It’s in my hair, my face… it’s like a glaze… like a… a coating, and… at first I thought, oh my god, I know what this is, this is some sort of amniotic – embryonic – fluid. I’m drenched in afterbirth, I’ve-I’ve breached the chrysalis, I’ve been reborn. But then the traffic, the stampede, the cars, the trucks, the horns, the screaming and I’m thinking no-no-no-no, reset, this is not rebirth, this is some kind of giddy illusion of renewal that happens in the final moment before death. And then I realize no-no-no, this is completely wrong because I look back at the building and I had the most stunning moment of clarity. I… I… I… I realized Michael, that I had emerged not from the doors of Kenner, Bach, and Ledeen, not through the portals of our vast and powerful law firm, but from the asshole of an organism whose sole function is to excrete the… the-the-the poison, the ammo, the defoliant necessary for other, larger, more powerful organisms to destroy the miracle of humanity. -Michael Clayton (2007)

Sometimes it feels like the heart is no place to be singing from at all

“If your time to you is worth savin’ then you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone for the times they are a-changin’.” – Bob Dylan

“This is all I gotta say to ya, woman your time is gonna come, your time is gonna come” – Led Zeppelin

“Sometimes time doesn’t heal no not at all” – Jack Johnson

“I just need a little of your time a little of your time to say the words I never said.” -Adam Levine

“I used to think it would take six-hundred years to tunnel under the wall with it. Old Andy did it in less than twenty. Oh, Andy loved geology. I guess it appealed to his meticulous nature. An ice age here, million years of mountain building there. Geology is the study of pressure and time. That’s all it takes really, pressure, and time.” – Red

There’s a dream in my brain that just won’t go away

Ever since the movie 28 Days Later, I have had an attraction to post-apocalyptic themed movies, books, etc. Recently (excluding 2012) most of the movies released with this particular feel have been zombie movies. Now don’t get me wrong, I love a good zombie movie as much as the next person (check out Pontypool or Zombieland) but what I really enjoy is the story that puts human nature to the test. Most zombie movies involve some sort of accident that causes a world-wide catastrophe. I prefer the situation that we did not engineer. A situation that comes from nowhere and the characters are forced to adapt. Outstanding examples of this type of movie are Blindness or Children of Men. As a side note, out of movies in the past 10 years, Children of Men is in my opinion one of the most well-directed movies I have seen (check him out Alfonso Cuarón).

This brings me to my point, I cannot wait for The Road to come out this Wednesday! Never before have I been so captured by the gritty realism of a book. The poignant beginning, a man haunted by an untold future as he struggles with his overwhelming urge to protect his son and his dwindling concern for his own life drew me in and would not release its grip. If this movie is at all as powerful as the book, prepare to be scared, creeped out, anxious, heartbroken. In truth this book told me a lot about myself, the characters overcoming more than just physical torment.

I am very much looking forward to this movie

“Grimacing at the day. He pulled the boy closer. Just remember that the things you put into your head are there forever, he said. You might want to think about that.
You forget some things, don’t you?
Yes. You forget what you want to remember and you remember what you want to forget.”
-Cormack McCarthy 2007
