You see Jack is a surgeon, and through flashbacks we learn that throughout his life he has struggled with his own concepts of faith and trust. His lack of trust in people can be directly attributed to his relationship with his father, and I think that this can also account for his position on faith. His inability to accept something blindly and without proof is something I not only can understand, but I deal with personally.  This is not to say i adhere to the Freudian philosophy that man’s view of God is based on his father. No, no, more than that I think that one of the biggest stepping stones in being a true believer in God is that one must take that one step without knowing whats to come. Sure we do this every day: faith that people will stop at stop signs (whats really stopping them from just continuing on?), faith that the rain we feel on our faces will not burn holes in our skin. Some might say these things are proven by psychology or science, counting on the improbability of most abnormal happenings. But for some, having faith that there is a supernatural being who created all of us and everything we know, is too big to handle. I myself am part of this group. But not only am I open to other peoples opinions, I am actively learning on my own what it is I believe. And really, thats all it takes: a self-made desire for knowledge, a drive to see for yourself what world view offers the least amount of faith.

This brings me to my point, I cannot wait for The Road to come out this Wednesday! Never before have I been so captured by the gritty realism of a book. The poignant beginning, a man haunted by an untold future as he struggles with his overwhelming urge to protect his son and his dwindling concern for his own life drew me in and would not release its grip. If this movie is at all as powerful as the book, prepare to be scared, creeped out, anxious, heartbroken. In truth this book told me a lot about myself, the characters overcoming more than just physical torment.
